History of the Peseta-Euro Transition
Spain was one of the 11 founding countries of the eurozone. The transition from the peseta to the euro followed this timeline:
- January 1, 1999: The euro becomes Spain's official currency for electronic and banking transactions. Exchange rate fixed at 166.386 pesetas per euro.
- January 1, 2002: Euro banknotes and coins enter circulation. Dual circulation period begins.
- February 28, 2002: The peseta ceases to be valid as a means of payment.
- June 30, 2021: The Bank of Spain permanently stops exchanging pesetas for euros.
