The most common mix-ups
- Horse and rider: if the rider is spearing a lion, it is Bulgaria (Madara Rider, in circulation since 2026). If he holds a raised sword and a shield, it is Lithuania (Vytis). A classical equestrian statue on a 50 cent is Italy (Marcus Aurelius).
- Tree: it is France. Since 2022 the tree is made of oak and olive branches; older coins show a stylised tree. Both are worth face value in normal circulation.
- Owl on a €1: Greece (a copy of the ancient Athenian tetradrachm). It is not rare and circulates all over Europe.
- Woman riding a bull on a €2: Greece (Abduction of Europa).
- A king or queen: Spain (Felipe VI or Juan Carlos I), Belgium (Philippe or Albert II), the Netherlands (Willem-Alexander or Beatrix) or Luxembourg (the Grand Duke). The lettering settles it.
- A map: a small Baltic country is Estonia; a map with a chequerboard is Croatia.

Is a foreign euro coin worth more?
